Abay Mado Catholic Academy

Abay Mado Catholic Academy, established in 2012, is located in Bahir Dar City, Amhara State, Ethiopia. It is in one of the areas where the first Jesuits in Ethiopia worked in the 16th Century. The main objective of the school is to uplift the local population through education. Presently, the school has 24 members of staff (17 female, 7 male) and 546 pupils (256 girls, 290 boys) in grade one to six.

 

Aim of the project

The main goal of the project is to make schooling easier to more children and offer them a quality education. The school is aimed to have these benefits:

-To reduce the number of students per class.

-To have better facilities that other schools could also benefit from.

-To form intellectuals that could help the region to be autosufficient.

-To create an environment that promotes mutual comprehension based in love and harmony, with the aim of promoting unity, recognising at the same time the cultural, religious and manners diversity.

-It will charge school fees to rich families to cover the expenses of the teachers salaries and to be able to accept students that can’t afford to pay the fees.

 

 

What it is doing

School expansion: the primary level started toward the end of 2013. The school managed to stock the new classrooms with furniture and secured furniture and equipment for laboratory and library. Plans are underway to start a Secondary school in 3-5 years’ time. The expansion project also allowed for the playground to be increased to allow more students to access the play area.  

Staff capacity building: staff enrolled for one year training in Montessori educational system  Sponsorship program: 50 students were sponsored by the school. Some of the students received full scholarship while others were partially sponsored.

The project is being promoted with the assistance of the Irish Jesuit Missions from the Province’s Jesuit Development Office.
